Robot shot-peening
Customer name :
Sonaca Montréal
Completion date : 2021-2024
In brief
Development of a robotized shot-forming process using ABB robots, ensuring precise, reproducible coverage for aircraft wing panels.
Project summary
For Sonaca, CTA designed a fully robotized shot peen forming solution to replace or complement manual methods. The project began with the analysis and optimization of current forming practices, and continued with the creation of an application to evaluate shot peening coverage. A repeatable robotic method was developed for high-stress areas, and process parameters (pressure, flow rate, speed) were validated to ensure forming complies with aerodynamic and structural requirements for wing panels.
CTA's role
- Study of existing manual processes and definition of technical requirements.
- Development of software tools to measure and control coverage.
- ABB robotics programming and integration.
- Testing, validation and transfer of the robotized method to the Sonaca team.
Results
- Development of a reliable robotic solution for shot peening.
- Improved precision, traceability and productivity.
- Reduced operator variation.
- Improved quality control and repeatability on wing panels.
