Proof-of-concept mobile robot for NDT inspection of plates
Customer name :
Nucleom
Completion date : 2024
In brief
Proof of concept demonstrating that a mobile robot can perform ultrasonic inspection of steel plates, including autonomous mapping and navigation.
Project summary
For customer Nucleom, the CTA carried out a proof of concept to automate non-destructive testing (NDT) of steel plates. A small Turtlebot mobile robot was used to simulate the deployment of an ultrasonic probe. The system was able to map its environment, locate itself precisely and follow a dynamic inspection trajectory adapted to the conditions encountered. This project paves the way for increased automation of NDT inspections on large surfaces.
CTA's role
- Selecting and configuring the Turtlebot mobile robot.
- Development of autonomous navigation (mapping, localization, trajectory).
- Integration of a simulated ultrasound probe.
- Perform tests and validate results.
Results
- Validation of the feasibility of mobile robotized NDT inspection.
- Demonstration of real-time mapping and trajectory tracking.
- Reduce inspection time and increase automation.
